An estimated 51 million Americans now own smart speakers, or 18% of U.S. households, up from  7% in 2017, according to Edison Research’s latest Infinite Dial report. Voice-activated speakers are quickly becoming household names, with brand awareness for Amazon’s Alexa topping 70% and Google Home’s hitting 56%, the report notes. And, one smart speaker just isn’t enough for many families, with 25% of smart speaker owners reporting they have two devices and 11% owning three or more.

And while sleek smart speakers are grabbing real estate in American homes, AM/FM radios are losing their places, with 29% of Americans saying they do not have any AM/FM radio at home, down from just 4% in 2008. Younger Americans in particular are packing up their radios, with 50% of Americans 18 to 34 years old reporting they do not have any radios at home, compared to 6% a decade ago.

While the forecast for radios may look worrisome, the uptake of voice-activated speakers is actually a boon for radio stations.
