How Do You Sound On Smart Speakers?
As smart speaker sales rise, stations need custom skills to showcase content.
Consumers are liking the sound of voice-activated speakers. After a holiday season where they were a top gift, smart speakers like Amazon’s Echo devices and Google Home are more than a novelty, they’re part of the new digital ecosystem. Smart speakers drive more audio listening, and Futuri Media can create custom Alexa skills for your station to tap into voice’s massive potential audience and revenue.
An estimated 51 million Americans now own smart speakers, or 18% of U.S. households, up from 7% in 2017, according to Edison Research’s latest Infinite Dial report. Voice-activated speakers are quickly becoming household names, with brand awareness for Amazon’s Alexa topping 70% and Google Home’s hitting 56%, the report notes. And, one smart speaker just isn’t enough for many families, with 25% of smart speaker owners reporting they have two devices and 11% owning three or more.
And while sleek smart speakers are grabbing real estate in American homes, AM/FM radios are losing their places, with 29% of Americans saying they do not have any AM/FM radio at home, down from just 4% in 2008. Younger Americans in particular are packing up their radios, with 50% of Americans 18 to 34 years old reporting they do not have any radios at home, compared to 6% a decade ago.
While the forecast for radios may look worrisome, the uptake of voice-activated speakers is actually a boon for radio stations. Radio stations are experts in creating outstanding audio experiences, and smart speakers are a pathway back into homes. As carmakers like Ford and BMW deploy Alexa in their newest models, skills can help radio retain its position as the in-car media of choice.
At Futuri Media, we’ve helping our clients showcase their brands and content on Alexa. We are market-leaders in skill development, and we can help your station build and deploy top-notch voice integrations. Radio stations can use their most popular programming, like morning shows and afternoon drive shows, as well as beloved local personalities, to attract users to their skills. And, on voice-activated speakers, radio listeners can live stream and explore on-demand libraries, including podcasts, interviews, and popular benchmarks.
We’ll help plan a strategy to attract both users and advertisers to your skills. With a Futuri custom-built Alexa skill, you can include your most popular radio segments, including weather, traffic and entertainment reports, and attach sponsors to the segments.
